Gift Wrapping is the most amazing way to tell a story. When I’m wrapping my gifts, I begin a narrative. The gift has a story. You took the time to harvest it, go out and discover it, create it- now it’s time to wrap. Why should this part of gift giving be any less special? The gift deserves a home and story, as does the person you are giving it to. Sounds a little much, but this exact attention to detail generates a feeling and setting for the gift receiver. Give yourself the time to think of how colors, texture and tie ons can make the moment complete . This is an art. This is story telling.
This oceanic wrap was created with scrap, cream linen fabric and wooden stars, soft materials juxtaposed against the harsh twine and plain butchers paper. The story in mind? A sailor had collected such treasures from his travels overseas. He missed his sweetheart and daughters who waited for him every evening on the shore. Finally, one twilight, his ship arrived on the horizon. He swung his salt encrusted knapsack over his shoulder and offered his treasures to his living treasures calling his name, waiting with outstretched arms. Who was I in this process? Some islander woman, bundling them up for him.
Above was a graduation gift for a girl who has everything. Money or a gift card was not an option among the mass amounts of it she’d probably receive. So here was a girl going away to college, leaving her hometown behind. As everyone gets homesick, a necklace with a flower indigenous to her hometown was pressed inside. This isn’t a made up narrative, this one is just a little thinking outside of the box. Nestled in a makeshift nest, the idea of always returning home as a comfort was the underlying theme.
Fathers day fishes.
Above, in white, a prairie narrative. Someone who is sick, lying under quilts, sometimes going for a walk outside to touch the wildflowers with her fingertips, drinking warm broth with a wooden spoon. Reality? A family friend was going through chemo treatments. Inside this gift were portraits of her children.
